THE ASSAM MINISTERS' AND DEPUTY MINISTERS• 
SALARIES AND ALLOWANCES ACT, 1958

to dettrmine the Salaries and A llowances of the Ministers and lhe Deputy 
Ministers. 
Prea:m.ble.-WHE REAS it is expedi ent to determine the Salaries and 
Allowances of the Ministers and the Deputy Minist ers ; 
It is hereby enacted in the Ninth Year of the Republic of India as 
follows:-
I. Short t itle and co:mmencement.-(i) This Act may be called the 
Assam Min isters' and Deputy Mini sters' Salaries and Allowances Act, 
1958. 
(ii) It shall come into force with effect from the 1st April, 1958. 
2. Salaries of the M inister" a n d the Deputy Ministers .-There 
shall be paid-
( a) to each Minister a salary of rupees one thousand per mensem; 
and 
(b) to each Deputy Minister a salary of rupees seven hundred 
and fifty per mensem. 
3. Residence of the Ministers and the Deputy Ministers. - -­
(i) Every Minister and every Deputy Minister shall be provided wit'n 
a free-furnished residence with grounds appurtenant thereto, in Shillong 
throughout the year, and also at any other plac e which the Sta te 
Government may, from time to time, for the purpose of this Act 
declare to be the he~dquarters of Government , for so long as each 
such decla ra tion remains in force .

(ii) Such residence and the grounds appurtenant thereto, shall be 
maintained at the i'ublic expense which shall not exceed the amount 
prescribed by rules : 
Provided that if a Minister or a Deputy Minister does not occupy 
the free-furnished residence provided by the Government , a house rent 
allowance at the rate of rupees two hundred and fifty per mensem 
in the case of a Minister _and at the rate of rupees two hundred per 
mensem in the case of a Deputy Minister and such service allowances 
as may be prescribed by rules shall be paid in lieu of such resid ence. 
Ex.IJlanation.-For the purpose of this section the expression "the 
public expense" shall include such' expenses as may be prescribed by rules. 
4. Conveyances and Gonveyance Allowance for the Ministers 
and Deputy M"fnisters. ·-(i) The State Govemment may, from time to time, 
purchase and provide suitable conveyances for the use of every Minister and 
Deputy Minister and may by rules provide for their maintenance and 
repair. 
(ii) Every Minister and Deputy Minister shall further be entitled to a 
conveyance allowance of rupees two hundred and rupees one hundred and 
fifty per mensem respectively: 
Provided that if a Minister or a Deputy Minister chooses to maintain 
his own car such Minister or Deputy Minister shall be entitled to a convey­
ance allowance of rupees three hundred per mensem. 
5. Prohibition against practising any profession or drawing 
salary as Member during the tenure of the office as Minister or 
Deputy Minister .-A Minister and a Deputy Minister shall not during the 
tenure of his office for which he draws salary and allowance-
(a) practise any profession or engage in any trade or undertake for 
remuneration any employment other than his duties as Minister or Deputy 
Minister, or 
(b) be entitled to any salary or allowance as a Member of the 
Legislative Assembly. 
6. Ulile of free-furnished residence and Government Convey­
ances on relinquishing office.-A Minister or a Deputy Minister shall be 
entitled to the privileges of the use of the free-furnished residence and 
Government conveyance on his ceasing to hold office for such peri od as 
prescribed by rules. 
7. Travelling and Daily Allowances.-Every Minister and Deputy 
Minister shall be entitled, while touring on public business, to travelling 
and daily allowances at such rates and on such conditions as may be pres­
cribed by rules. 
8. Power to make rules. - (i) The State Government may, by 
notification in the official Gazett e, make rules for carrying out the pur-
poses of this Act . . 
(ii) All rul es made under this Act shall be laid before the Assam Legis­
lative A:.sembly, as soon as may be , a fter they are made . 
~. Repeal of Assam Act No.VI of 1948.-The Assam Ministers' 
(Salaries and Allowances) Act, 1948, is hereby repealed.
